5 Handy Resources for iPhone Game Developers

In the 4 months I was working on Togolon, from idea to release, I came across some great resources on the web that helped me get started and solve a few of the inevitable problems along the way. These are a few of my favourites.

For me, probably the greatest achievement of the iPhone is that it has well and truly brought back the days of the bedroom game programmer. All you need is some time, determination, and a copy of the iPhone SDK.  So the first port of call for any budding developer will be Apple’s iPhone Dev Center.

1. iPhone Dev Center

The Dev Center provides a wealth of information including guides, videos and sample code to introduce you to the iPhone SDK, as well as downloads for the SDK itself.

2. Gamedev.net

As good as Apple’s resources are, they aren’t tailored to game development, which is where sites like Gamedev.net come in. Here you will find links to heaps of useful articles on everything from AI theory to maths and physics.

3. Stackoverflow

Everyone needs advice from time to time, and Stackoverflow is possibly one of the best places to get answers to any of your programming questions. Every question I’ve posted has been answered within the hour!

4. iphonedevsdk.com Forums

For some more iPhone-specific advice, the iphonedevsdk forums are the place to be! With boards covering everything from programming to marketing, chances are you’ll find some great help and ideas here.

5. iPhone Developers on Twitter

@timhaines has put together a list of at least 200 iPhone developers who use Twitter. Be sure to add yourself here, and feel free to follow any of the developers listed here (including myself, @theothertomelliott, and this site, @iphoneachieve). There’s a great community out there, and this is a brilliant way to get to know people.

So there we go, just a few of the sites that helped me along the way to my first iPhone game. I hope you find them useful, and happy developing!
