What have you been playing lately?

So, my move to the United States has been quite eventful, and as a result, iPhone Achievements has been somewhat neglected. I can only apologize, but rest assured, I’m back on the case! You’ll see more updates, more reviews, more achievements and articles! I’m always looking for contributors, so if you’re keen on iPhone gaming and/or writing, drop me a line via the contact page and let me know what you’re interested in doing!

Thankfully, even though I’ve been busy with the move, I’ve managed to squeeze in a touch of gaming (especially recently) and I’m always on the look out for bargain independents or those wallet crushing AAA titles. I’m a bit of a sucker for cult hits as well!

In no particular order, here’s what’s been taking up my very little spare time:

I seriously can’t get enough of this title! Amazingly slick 16-bit style graphics and a control scheme that is both intuitive and frustrating at the same time. After you’ve completed a level, go back to race your ghost for a higher score and more money to upgrade your shizzle yo!

One of the premium titles I was referring to earlier, this one is pretty hefty at $10, but when you consider that the quality of the port sits somewhere between the PSP and DS versions, that $10 is starting to look pretty attractive. Brilliant controls, great game.

This one’s been out for a while. A nice little Scrabble clone with online turn-based moves. Push notifications tell you when it’s your turn. I’m not going to give you my username, because I’m crap, but it’s still fun!

Out of the unusual and crowded genre of tilt/jump games, Doodle Jump got the formula right and is easily the best one out there. Online scores and Facebook/Twitter integration is awesome and the guys over at Lima Sky do the fans justice with constant updates!

I can not stress this enough: BUY THIS GAME! I’ve owned this title on both Mac and PC and this was an insta-purchase for me. A quirky twist on the tower defense genre and with a polish that only PopCap can deliver. A steal at $3.

Being a fan of Wolfenstein RPG, picking up this bad boy wasn’t really something I needed to think about. Choose from 3 characters and wield your chainsaw as you battle demonic forces once again. Turn based, RPG with classic Doom atmosphere and sounds. Nice!

If you’re just sick of Minigore’s repetition and are after a more meaty twin stick shooter, look no further. Nice graphics and sound and quite a challenge to boot. This will keep you in check until Hardgore drops.

This one flew under my radar for a while. Brought to you by Konami, this is one nice little physics/bounce adventure. Charmingly simple graphics and huge boss fights await. I can’t put this one down either.

Is it any wonder my time disappeared? I’m going to bring you a few reviews on some of these soon, so keep an eye out!

Feel free to let me know what you’ve been playing lately and don’t forget to drop your suggestions below.

Red Conquest!

Red Conquest! [App Store]

John Kooistra is a name I know well. I am a fanboy of his Blue Attack! and Blue Defense! series.  Please see my Top 5 Shooter article to understand where I’m coming from. It is without question that when Cat In A Box games released Red Conquest! out into the App Store, I didn’t hesitate to make this purchase. Here is my adventure into once again the far reaches of outer space, almost zen-like in my pursuit of RTS domination.

Twin Blades

Twin Blades [App Store]

Manga inspired style, on screen blood splatter, a not so innocent nun with deadly scythe in hand. Add a medieval town full of zombies. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect day! Twin Blades is a frantic, free-for-all side scroller. What caught my eye with this one is the flowing animation in the game which is, simply put, stunning. From the team that brought you My Brute, you can easily see how the team brings you another title with outstanding attention to detail.

Melon Golf

Melon Golf [App Store]

On searching the App Store today for new games, it’s a joy to stumble upon some great bargains. It’s been out for a few months now but the first game from developer 2Up Games has secured a firm place in my heart. Melon Golf isn’t a golf game per say, well you are judged to stay under par and there is a hole to fling your melon in. No need for your wedge, 9-iron or wood. Taking the physics approach you slingshot your melon from point A to point B.
