N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance By Gameloft

All the hype in the world landed into my fingers the day of release for this game.  N.O.V.A-Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance is the definitive first person shooter brought to you by the app juggernaut of Gameloft.  Inspired by the likes of Halo and Half Life, its the perfect example of how inspiration and perseverance  can produce a wonderful sci fi adventure for our portable console of choice.  So did it live up to all the hype? or was it like predecessors and get vaporised within the growing appstore.

The story revolves around retired marine Kal Wardin who has been called into active duty again due to an alien threat against the Alliance. Spanning a massive 13 levels and 5 gorgeous enviroments, campaing mode offers you just that.  Boasting half decent in-story voice acting, the cut scenes in game keep the pace moving at a great speed while background info is laid out nicely for the sci fi nerds in us all.  The characters in the game draw you in and the A.I “Cortana” like computer a nice objective touch to pace you along the journey.  I’m expecting a sequel and a prequel to this game in the near future.  Its how we roll!.  Within the game as well, Gameloft live achievements also reward you for following the story arch, or not.  You decde who you choose to be!

Graphically this game is a definitive shiner, visual eye candy from the get go with a great intro movie into gameplay nuances.  Explosions look epic and hurtful, character design was well done and the draw distance was neatly packaged.  The levels are well laid out as to the standard of scenery, this is definitely not wallpaper like trees.  It is visual eye candy  and matched up with the Hoo ah! military soundtrack, we gonna make them alien “judges” hurt real good marine.

Control wise you have a choice of three different schemes.  Standard affair of left virtual stick to move and right to look around/shoot button was my choice in which I must say was not as accurate as, lets say Eliminate was.  Im hoping in the next update they add the option of changing the sensitivity of x and y movements.  That would make it a masterpiece of options to any gamer, Noob or myself a seasoned vet *or Viet, hehee*.   Changing weapons is a breeze with a quick swipe on the upper right hand corner and during the game an arrow points you into the suggested path so you don’t get disorientated in the gunfire.  The assault rifle, shot gun and rocket launcher are included into the 6 weapon arsenal as well as standard grenades.  As you progress into the game, gun turrents also are at your disposal.

Multiplayer online is a mixed bag for me.  5 maps and growing I’m sure, and yes Gameloft have their bases covered in terms of local wifi, bluetooth, and global online.  Unlike Eliminate, you need to go into a lobby room, pick you room, no indication of who your up against, level? nope, you’re probably going to get pwned, or no wait, its loading now.  It was frustrating to say the least getting on, and staying on as well.  WHile on it was somewhat enjoyable to level up every match, which would bring me back for some more.

Overall this package was a killer game.  So did it live up to the hype, somewhat.  In single player campaign mode, most definately.  The storyline, character design and overall polish of the game puts a new benchmark on iphone gaming.  The multiplayer, I guess is still in its early stages and hopefully they will address this issue in future updates for a more enjoyable online experience.  As it stands the Vanguard Alliance is here to stay and a must have addition to any iphone gamers collection.

Football Manager 2010

Football Manager 2010 [App Store]

Having played all Sports Interactive games since I was 10 years old back in the 99/00 season, I felt vivdly excited when seeing the release on the App Store. My girlfriend quotes ‘IT’s JUST A GAME’ to me several time a day when losing a match, but for any fan of the series will know its much more, it may even be possible to put SI down as your religion on the Census.

So how can a PC game that takes up alomost 2gb worth of space to play along with pretty huge save files port over to the iPhone succesfully? When first playing the game I was a little dissapointed as it looked a little retro, just like those first CM games I played, with much of the PC features stripped away, the memory sucking 3D engine, the touchline instructions and press conferences (thank god for that one). The stripped down game however takes nothing away from the enoyability of the game, in fact for the less hardcore FM fans this may well be a releif. There are a few dissapointments in the gameplay, such as the lack of ability to tweak tacitical formations and movements, and hopefully these can be sorted in the near future, otherwise at 2-0 down, theres not a lot you can do apart from stick 3 forwards on.

Obviously to create a game on the iPhone, it is only possible to select one playable lague, with a slimmed down database containing the main 20ish players from each team, which sounds like a bad move. It isn’t, instead, it makes you work like a Peter Taylor of the world, trawling through the lower leagues for players who have some potential to improve, or looking whos avaliable on the free. Having signed for my Leicester team players from Leyton Orient and Huddersfield rather than a cheap foreinger from a country I found in the Fifa World Rankings only, I felt a sense of bringing back the O’Neil days to my club.

The key aspects of the game are still intact, with the need to man manage your squad, keeping your players happy or if there not playing letting them move on somewhere else. Maintaining fitness of the older players in the squad is one of the hardest tasks to do and requires shrewd subs, good training schedules for them and promoting through young players to replace them with. Part of squad maintainence in the lower leagues is being able to loan players throughout the year, and the transfer system can be accessed in many ways. Each club as two scouts who can look for players who may be willing to join, whilst the huge search feature is still here. The most important feature of Football Manager for of us geeks out there is the in game stats of our players, being able to scrutinise how our team is doing, how many passes are going astray and figuring out why the opposing left back is racing up the pitch every two minutes, all these stats are still avaliable in game through a menu found in the bottom right corner and can be swiped through to access the different pages.

Wether you play as a Premiership giant, a financial stricken club with no money or a Aussie A-League team you will love Football Manager Handheld as if it was the offspring of the desktop version. Don’t be put off by the lack of some of the desktops features 3 hours in you won’t even notice.

Note to SI: Add a Social Network with Achievements just like Stream on the desktop version, would make this game pretty much complete

Overall

StarStarStarStarStar

Yes, it costs £6.99, but that is a shrewd investment, you like all others who play FM will lose hours upon days of you life!

Warning: Do not play on this bus, you will miss your stop and whats more you’ll be too busy to care!

Red Conquest!

Red Conquest! [App Store]

John Kooistra is a name I know well. I am a fanboy of his Blue Attack! and Blue Defense! series.  Please see my Top 5 Shooter article to understand where I’m coming from. It is without question that when Cat In A Box games released Red Conquest! out into the App Store, I didn’t hesitate to make this purchase. Here is my adventure into once again the far reaches of outer space, almost zen-like in my pursuit of RTS domination.

Twin Blades

Twin Blades [App Store]

Manga inspired style, on screen blood splatter, a not so innocent nun with deadly scythe in hand. Add a medieval town full of zombies. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect day! Twin Blades is a frantic, free-for-all side scroller. What caught my eye with this one is the flowing animation in the game which is, simply put, stunning. From the team that brought you My Brute, you can easily see how the team brings you another title with outstanding attention to detail.

Melon Golf

Melon Golf [App Store]

On searching the App Store today for new games, it’s a joy to stumble upon some great bargains. It’s been out for a few months now but the first game from developer 2Up Games has secured a firm place in my heart. Melon Golf isn’t a golf game per say, well you are judged to stay under par and there is a hole to fling your melon in. No need for your wedge, 9-iron or wood. Taking the physics approach you slingshot your melon from point A to point B.
