It’s been a while since my last review. From juggling a full time job, a new breed of young gamers (my sons) and brooding over how to take on this app review lifestyle. Too many games, and such little time to play them all. Then it came to me. Like the sacred ring, there is currently one game to rule them all. My silence has ended.

You are an employee of mega conglomerate Arsenal Megacorp – weapons manufacturer. Their secret: The weapons they produce have all been tested on live subjects. As an employee, it is your duty to “compete” in 4-player death matches and from the opening sequence, you are thrown into Arsenal Megacorp’s world of propaganda.
With retro-like comedy similar to that of Portal and Team Fortress, the speed of Unreal Tournament speed and graphics rarely seen on the iPhone, you’ve a cocktail for FPS greatness. Words cannot describe how addictive this game is. Team Ngmoco have outdone themselves yet again.
Control wise it is… well… perfect. It’s understandable why this one had such a long development cycle. Team Ngmoco wanted the virtual controls to move just right. They also said, “Hey! It controls nice, now let’s make it look the same.” Yep, they did that too. Plenty of eye candy for the iPhone and it’s astonishing how well they utilized the power of our console of choice.
Upgrades take place in-game thanks to an experience point and monetary system (credits from the fallen). You are rewarded with different armour classes, special boost perks and of course… weapons. You are allowed a certain amount of “energy” with which you can use to enter battles. After your energy has been depleated, you can still play, but can no longer earn credits or experience from your fallen combatants. You can choose to purchase more energy with real world money if you desire or wait some time and allow it to recharge. Ngmoco have taken a risky approach here by releasing a AAA quality title for free, but relying on micro-transactions. Time will tell whether it was a wise one or not.
Overall this game is at the pinnacle of FPS excellence. With plenty of leaderboard action and a huge amount of achievements to unlock courtesy of Plus+, it will keep the more fussy of eaters coming back for a slice of the pie.
