The iPhone Christmas Round Up

Every Christmas they’re are games that tide you through holiday cheer, some are great and some like bon bons, looks sweet on the outside  but pop the inside and all you get is a dodgy knock off. Today offcially marks the end of term for a lot of people and maybe even time off work for others so lets bring a little ‘ho, ho ho’ onto your iphone this year and look at some of the top yuletide greats. Please note, due to me living no where close to snow I thought I’d add some snow inspired games into this Christmas round up as well.  In no order whatsoever, and if anyone wants to add to it by all means!.

1. iStunt [App Store]

Nothing short of fun, stuntin physics and simple brilliance.  It reminds me of moto games of yesteryear and with a learning curve *no pun intended* to ease you into the snowboarding game.  A massive 20 stylin levels that will keep you occupied all throughout the December holiday season and onwards.  Leader-boards a plenty with Openfeint FTW!! No Brainer!

iStunt

2. Artic Shuffle 2 [App Store]

Chillax with this puzzler of a game.  The Pinball Penguins are back with a vengeance!  Play by aiming your penguin at the desired target, steady on because you need the midas touch to avoid all the obstacles in your way.  Its all about the points yo! start with ice curling, move onto iced up mini golf and try to avoid exploding your flightless friends while your at it.  Big 50 levels with in-app purchases.  Cute game, big leader-board rewards, using the Agon Online platform. If your a thinking person rather than a mindelss shooter like me this is a must have xmas game.

Arctic Shuffle

3. Elf [App Store]

Hide y Ho, diddle dee Potatoes.. kinda leprechaunish in design but don’t let this little gem fool you, its a lot better to play than it looks.  The polish on this addictive jumper will shine brighter than the star above “you know who”.  I wouldn’t ask any more from Matmi (who feature with more than one game on this list).  Guide you Elf into the stratosphere while catching stars, boosters and avoid those nasty thistles for that high score.  Simple but be warned, this game is addictive!!

Elf

4. Flight Before Christmas [App Store]

On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me another line drawing game! This is one of the better versions of the many line drawing games that have appeared since the huge success of Flight Control. As the image below shows, the graphics are crisp and rather pleasing. The aim of the game – simple! You play as Santa deleivering presents to children, got to be more fun than having to dress up as Santa!

flight

5. Crazy Snowboard: Holiday Special [App Store]

Oh yeah, its the silly season and we grabbin some air and gone crazy, in the original and best iPhone snowboarder.  Fantastic graphics, huge gameplay with 30 stacked missions with a global ranking system to boot.  the ninth major update delivers with better lighting effects, even more locations, a santa suit and crazy snowman snowboard.  Now who want’s to knock over some elves? Further on from the holiday season you know that this App is a worth purchase given the great work from the developers to keep it consistantly fresh.

Snowboard

6. Snowy’s Cristmas Pinball [App Store]

From the guys that brought you the award-winner Monster Pinball, the Matmi style is back at again with Snowy’s table.  Smoother than hot egg nog in the frame rate, the physics engine hits overdrive when the ice ball is activated.  Heaps of new and quirky sound effects, standard Facebook, local and online leader-boards.  Bashing a snowball round a field has never been so much fun!

7. Amateur Surgeon: Christmas Edition [App Store]

Bah Humbug! The brainiacs at Adult Swim decided they wanted you to dissect and put back together Santa and his helpers. In this free edition of Amateur Surgeon you get five levels of holiday fun, DIY surgery on Rudolph? why not.  Snip here, tuck there and apply some Pixie Dust for the healing touch.  The background story alone is worth a chuckle.  Oh, its up to you to save Christmas!!

Adult Swim

8. Ho Ho Ho Yellow Snow Deluxe [App Store]

Online notoriety in 2007 and it went viral, its been played worldwide by the masses,  now available for our iphone.  Its had a visual revamp and quite frankly, pisses (ed – seriously…) on all pretenders.  New game modes and touch controls if that tickles your fancy or you can just pee free in “Zen” mode.  Naughty or nice, I spelt pee freely in the ice.. (ed. note - EWWWWWWWW seriously I worry for you sometimes)

ss2

9. Holiday Smash [App Store]

Colour my Christmas with this arcade stunner!  Keep your balls in the air and your lasers charged, goal is to smash the bejesus out of the lights as quickly as possible.  Christmas inspired levels a noteworthy mention and yes, you can take out the Gingerbread Man’s gum drop buttons.  Plenty of Openfeint achievements to jingle your bells to with more to come.  For a limited time, its free so start your downloads and spread the word!

Holiday Smash

10. A Christmas Santa [App Store]

Last but not least, calling a strike on Christmas is one low blow by Rudolph.  He works for free for goodness sake!  And did I mention Santa of all people hit by the recession, is broke? With only a few days to go, he’s made up his mind and will go it alone.  Let’s launch the jolly sod! Sleigh or Rocket? either way its all about the angles.  Openfeint a go go with achievements and also a hidden mission.  I’m aiming for that little drummer boy! I hate that song..

Hidden Gems … Part 1!

Hidden Gems … Part 1!

While sitting here on my lunch break I’m looking at the crazy amount of apps I have yet to play and review. Yes I download them because, well, I can! I’ll get through them eventually and I will review most of the standouts for better or worse. But what about the smaller budget gems, the ones that keep me coming back for sheer crazy gameplay, the dollar apps that don’t have big marketing budgets. It’s hard for us as iPhone gamers to highlight these gems as most of the sites stick to reviewing the big budget games. The only way we can find these hidden gems is by following every developer possible on Twitter or rummaging through hundreds of pages of the App Store.

These are the unsung heroes I have yet to delete from my iPhone. The majority have online achievements to keep me coming back, or addictive and quick gameplay for that wait, or in my case, writers block moment. This is in no order whatsoever and I would like to extend my gratitude to the genius dev teams involved for making the most of my precious minutes enjoyable! I applaud you all!

Why not support these developers and check their games out too. Hopefully, you will find a wealth of great games in the App Store you never even knew about!

1. Rummage [App Store]

More of a strategy game hidden in a word tile puzzle game. Each puzzle has a list of 11 to 20 words to spell out with each new word being as frustrating as the last. It will draw you in and punish you at the same time. A simple game for the casual gamer and those who want a brain drain. More achievements than you can poke a stick at and I’m sure of more to come. It succedes in the aim of where smaller developers create a game that is easy to play but hard to beat and will have you coming back time and time again.

Rummage

2. Quitit! [App Store]

Set as a gameshow with a virtual pet and you’re the star. Lumpy! Tease me or please me. I stumbled upon this game a while back and its latest episode: Episode 2 update is a blast and new episodes are due with regular updates in the style of Pocket God. Plenty of upgraded pokers to smack out Lumpy with, a plethora of minigames, gifts and accessories to pimp him out with. Stats and unhosted achievements included.

Quitit!

3. Gas Tycoon 2 [App Store]

I only pounced on this game a couple of days ago. If you enjoy the likes of the classic Pipe Dream or Pipe Mania then this is the game for you. If you have no clue what the games I just mentioned are, then try the lite version first. Gas Tycoon 2 lays down the pipelines once again in the puzzle genre and it’s addictive like the smell of petrol in the morning. Connect up the grid, restore the natural gas supply for the residents. Simple, right? Not likely! Openfeint achievements here we come!

Gas Tycoon

4. Mr. Bounce [App Store]

What was old, is now new. What was creative then, is creative now. Old school principles with a very trance-like musical score. Plenty of neon colours to set the mood and great ball physics. Think you’ve mastered the bouncing ball? It will challenge your senses and your coordination with walls, wind, blockers and bouncers. Simply a wonderful and engaging experience. Online hall of fame with more bounce for your ounce!

Mr.Bounce

5. Boom Brigade [App Store]

If a tower defence game and a line drawing game had a baby, it’d be this nutter! Even if you’re a fan like me of top down shooters, its worth a sneak peek. So much charm in animation, so much fun packed into a hoorah of iPhone entertainment. You control up to 4 troopers and defend your base against the endless alien horde. Heaps of upgrades to your arsenal to help the never ending battle. Can you survive? New updates are on the way so get a move on soldier!

BoomBrigade

One of the key features that lure avid gamers like me to purchase smaller games on the iPhone, is the appearence of achievements, with the likes of OpenFeint, AGON, Gameloft Live, Plus+ and the soon to be released Chillingo Crystal there is no reason not to go and find a gem! As soon as I finish playing these games i’ll be back with another article on the new games you should own!

Rummage

Rummage [App Store]

I’m an all round type of guy; in gaming, I can get my box on with the best of them. Kill, crush and destroy is my gaming mantra. In the list of apps on my iPhone, I’ll admit, very few of them do I have to think too much about. No-brainers I guess you’d call them.

There are times though, when I want to think things out before I make the next move, a sense of einstein satisfaction if you must call it for something “fresh”.

Storm Attack

Storm Attack [App Store]

A storm is brewing… are you ready for imminent addiction?

The App Store is full of puzzle games trying to emulate Tetris and Bejewelled, making it hard to distinguish between the available titles. For a tile or block match game to stand out and succeed it needs to have a niche: a quirky fix that our minds can can relate to and keep us addicted. We want a Tetris-like challenge that takes quick reflexes and common sense, something that makes us think carefully and sacrifice the few for the greater color. That was the pinnacle of tile gaming. No contest.

Once again we drag and drop a constant stream of colored, falling blocks into place. Systematically chaining up events, building up a score before the stack reaches the top of the screen. Sound familiar to a lot of games? Well these are the only similarities. Storm Attack has added features over three different game modes. Each game mode can be started from either level 1 or level 10 (when unlocked). Its a blast! Build a score and combat the slower ealier levels, you can shake the device for a further storm of 15 blocks. Oh did I mention that we must keep an eye on our limited ammo supply, you know the very same ammo we need to destroy these blocks? Destroying less than 6 blocks reduces your ammo by one, with a max of four this can run out very quickly, leaving you in trouble should a storm be close. The new Bomb Mode drops a bomb in to your blocks each level requiring you to sacrafice a certain number of ammo to destroy it.

color splash

Agon Online delivers a growing worldwide leaderboard (yours truly is currently the reigning champ 2 color mode… Booyah!) and a tsunami load of achievements (41 in total following the update). The achievements range from the fairly simple ‘Reach Level 10′, the stress incducing ‘Gambler’ in which you need a 7x row clear and beating the developers ‘Secret Score’.
Graphically the game is well laid out, simple, colourful and to the point. Touch gestures to guide the blocks into place. Sound wise its completed with a technoesque beat similar to retro classics. I chose the headphones to keep me in the “zone”.

Overall this game is definitely a winner and a worthy contender of tile game of the year in my books. From the simple and colourful layout, to the potent lightning strikes from the storm. It sets the mood and sense of urgency from the start. Its a perfect example for the casual gamer and the hardcore elite in terms of how gameplay alone here is the winner, with raindrops of prettiness being a side effect. Its been a while since the greatness of Tetris type games was spun around 360 and given the app treatment this genre deserves.

The storm’s a brewing, and its raining gold!

Storm Attack still awes me in its simplicity and addictive gameplay. You will be coming back time and time again for a self induced heart attack just to beat your high score!

5 Stars.

Doom Resurrection

Doom Resurrection [App Store]

John Carmack, legendary pioneer in gaming circles and co-founder of id Software spells Doom. When Doom Resurrection’s release on the iPhone was given his tick of approval, you know its going to be something special. Now that the price has come down a little bit, I felt it was my duty to carry on this 16 year obsession with the BFG.
