Balloon Headed Boy

Released earlier this year, with all the hoo-haa going on with “Balloon Boy”, I thought I’d relive this little beauty which is based on a Flash game of the same title.

Balloon Headed Boy [App Store]

If Mario and Kirby had a baby, it’d be Balloon Headed Boy. So cute you could squeeze him. This whacky little platformer from Gimme5games ends up being a clever little title. Going beyond the touch control of left and right, they add the element of floating around with your head, which just happens to be a pink balloon!

Dark Nebula: Episode 1

Dark Nebula: Episode 1 [App Store] has been finally released into the wild. It’s a tilt-controlled ball rolling game probably moreso described as a skill-based action game. The sense of urgency with every tilt, jump and swipe at the screen puts it into a weird league of its own. More bizarrely was that the game was brought to our us by Anders Hejdenberg, the lead designer of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. From shooter to labyrinth puzzler? Go figure? The game looks simply stunning. It’s shiny and shimmering with explosions aplenty. Each level is well designed with the need for absolute care when navigating obstacles like trigger switches, spikes, potholes, and lasers. It also controls with the utmost precision. It truly is tight… like a tiger.

Though gameplay is pretty much perfect and the game visually intense, it does leave us begging for more. It is a short experience with only 10 levels.  Some of which are frustrating to say the least, but at least the development team help you out there with some of the traps being slowed down during your next round. It’s a well thought out gameplay mechanism that saves you ragequitting or throwing your precious. In terms of replay, there is only the usual gold star timed event offering.

In summary: Looks amazing, sweet controls, short game. Hopefully the “Episode 1″ moniker is a sign of more to come!

Another worthy addition! 4 stars.

Draw Slasher: Dark Ninja Vs Pirate Monkey Zombies

draw slasher dark ninja vs pirate monkey zombies icon

Ok now you’d think that combining dark ninjas and pirate monkey zombies (say that three times fast) together would create the single greatest game devised by anyone, ever. I, for one, was somewhat let down.

“Draw Slasher” [App Store] is a survival action game in which you take control of a cute ninja fighting against Pirate Monkey Zombies. These monsters invade your peaceful island, and you are the only one, who can stop them! Slash through your enemies in style known from countless Japanese anime, and movies! – The App Store

Use your fingers to control your ninja left and right on the screen and draw blood lines across your opponent to cut through him leaving him headless, limbless and generally messy. Brilliant! Tarantino would be proud… or would he?

Canabalt

canabalt-1

Every once in a while, a game will come along that will make you stop what you’re doing and just watch. Canabalt [App Store] IS that game. A flash game originally, Canabalt was developed by Adam “Atomic” Saltsman. He made it in just 5 days for the Experimental Gameplay Project. Over the course of a relatively small development cycle, Canabalt was ported to the iPhone by Semi Secret (formed by Saltsman and partners Eric Johnson and Danny Baranowsky).

Upon firing up the game, you’re immediately thrust in to an apocalyptic world with rumbling skyscrapers and shattered glass. You control a nameless, suited man, running for his life from the impending doom that surrounds him.

Soosiz

soosiz

Soosiz [App Store] a 2D platformer by Touch Foo has hit the app store with a hop, skip and a jump. The basic gameplay found in Soosiz is that of a traditional platformer – collect coins, jump your way over obstacles and enemies, and save your buddies throughout the worlds. With a cast of enemies that can easily be jumped upon, big boss battles and a heap of secret world paths to unlock, this is a massive adventure! With gravity defying feats like going upside down on planets, fun and excitement is around every turn. Typically there’s a bonus for collecting 100 coins. In Soosiz, this makes you temporarily invincible – a nice little kick in the pants as you continue along your adventure.
