Apple Game Center

So, it seems that what we here at iPhone Achievements have been hoping for has finally come to fruition: Apple’s very own social network. Launching alongside OS 4.0, Apple Game Center is set to include matchmaking, leaderboards and achievements. Could this spell trouble for the other giants in iPhone’s social networking arena?

“Our 6th tent pole is Game Center. This is a dev preview for OS 4. Gaming is extremely popular on the iPhone and iPod touch. We have 50,000 games. Let’s compare that to the competition… the PSP and DS… we blow them out of the water.”

“We want to make gaming even better on the iPhone — so we added a social gaming network.”

Apple’s so called “6th tent pole” is going to have a massive impact both on portable gaming as a whole and also on the current non-unified social networking companies. Not once throughout their presentation did they mention giants such as OpenFeint, Plus+ or Agon.

Coming sometime later this year, it is still very much up in the air as to what this means for our other social networking friends. iPhone Achievements will definitely be keeping an eye on the progress of the situation!
