Rolando 2: Chapter 1 [App Store] (Free)
Rolando 2 [App Store] (Paid)

Discover many fabled regions of this mysterious new world. Touch, tilt and slide your way through a kaleidoscopic environment filled with color, mystery and danger. New 3D landscapes, new puzzles and new ways to unfold your own Rolandos story.

This amazing second installment of the colorful platformer has taken advantage of the new App Store policy allowing developers to release free apps with in-app purchases. The game offers a full entire first chapter of Rolando 2 while remaining chapters are paid for by purchasing in-app. Or you can do what I did, and buy the whole game because it’s oh so cute :) Its a decent sized game spanning tropical beaches, ancient ruins to the depths of the darkest caverns. Graphically whimsical as is its older brother Rolando, and the soundtrack instantly makes you happy. The game takes advantage of the iPhone accelerometer nicely – with the developer clearly knowing how to properly implement it. With global leaderboards and plenty of achievements to unlock, this title will definitely keep me coming back for more.

Another quality Ngmoco release.

Canabalt

canabalt-1

Every once in a while, a game will come along that will make you stop what you’re doing and just watch. Canabalt [App Store] IS that game. A flash game originally, Canabalt was developed by Adam “Atomic” Saltsman. He made it in just 5 days for the Experimental Gameplay Project. Over the course of a relatively small development cycle, Canabalt was ported to the iPhone by Semi Secret (formed by Saltsman and partners Eric Johnson and Danny Baranowsky).

Upon firing up the game, you’re immediately thrust in to an apocalyptic world with rumbling skyscrapers and shattered glass. You control a nameless, suited man, running for his life from the impending doom that surrounds him.

Soosiz

soosiz

Soosiz [App Store] a 2D platformer by Touch Foo has hit the app store with a hop, skip and a jump. The basic gameplay found in Soosiz is that of a traditional platformer – collect coins, jump your way over obstacles and enemies, and save your buddies throughout the worlds. With a cast of enemies that can easily be jumped upon, big boss battles and a heap of secret world paths to unlock, this is a massive adventure! With gravity defying feats like going upside down on planets, fun and excitement is around every turn. Typically there’s a bonus for collecting 100 coins. In Soosiz, this makes you temporarily invincible – a nice little kick in the pants as you continue along your adventure.

Straw Ninja: Just Run

original

Absolute mindless fun at the cost of a packet of chewing gum. Straw Ninja: Just Run [App Store] is the first in a series of  ”One Touch Play” casual games from the geniuses at Digital Play.  Everyone can play, no complex moves to remember – just run ya Ninjaness off! Global leaderboards utilising Openfeint will show off who is grand master of the tap and hold. With a very simple and addictive control system, even if you had your arm severed in combat you’d still have a chance of winning.

  • Tap to jump
  • Tap once again to shoot straw when straw-ninja is jumping.
  • Tap and hold to “swingjump” over the other side.

Keep him airborne to get big kamikaze points. Graphically whimsical with a sea of cool. Not as frantic as Canabalt but still awesome fun!

Another little gem. 3.5 stars.
